Here’s another write up for anyone still waiting~
After an eventful night for Spook and Cobalt, the team awakens to the buzz of the media.
The penthouse floor was soaked with seawater, errant starfish scattered about.
All over the news in all forms of media outlets:
- We Don’t Have One takes over alien overlord Vanquish
- Accompanied by a old video footage of Captain Excelsior hitting Vanquish with a tank.
- Who are We Don’t Have One?
- Respawn – The team’s leader and immortal defender.
- Spook – The reformed bad girl daughter of The Revenant and Dr. Phantasma.
- Splendid – The quiet, but ultra-powerful wielder of the power cosmic.
- Congo Jack – The fun-loving adventurer who never misses a shot.
- Inkling – The artist who turns street art into superheroism.
- Cobalt – The sensitive Keplerian heartthrob from beyond the stars.
- And Fraidy Kat – The kickass airline heiress who knows no fear.
Respawn kicked down the door to his room. “Family meeting!” he yelled in a panicked voice. Cobalt, who had been bringing coffee and breakfast over to the table, was hit by the flying door, sending their hard work askew. Cobalt explained that they had crashed a giant alien warship into the ocean last night to save the earth. Their crystalline ship was currently gone as it had taken a bomb that would have blown up half of the earth up into space, but it would probably come back eventually.
Inkling, who had done her usual sneaking in and out of her home, was walking back to the penthouse while catching up on the headlines through her phone. The stories were pretty positive in regard to We Don’t Have One, mostly curious about the team, searching out information about them and their exploits. Leaked footage of the reality show, clips about the A-maze-ing Toy Company were everywhere. Media vans surrounded the apartment building, a crowd of reporters and cameramen clustered around the entrance. When they spotted Inkling as she shouldered her way to the building, they asked her a barrage of questions trying to get more on the story. But she continued forward ignoring them until she made it past the doorman keeping the crowd at bay.
When Inkling joined the family meeting, Cobalt recapped their night adventure with Spook as she was the only one who responded to their phone. An alien named Vanquish had visited the earth during the night, eventually abducting Cobalt and Spook as they had gone to investigate. During the confrontation, Vanquish eventually threatened to blow half the Earth up, leading to a last minute save by Cobalt and his ship. Cobalt also shared that they discovered that they can now teleport, explaining the seawater and starfish, and demonstrated their technopathic ability by flipping through the TV channels from afar. Inkling, going through the media’s description of the team mentioned that Fraidy Kat wasn’t part of the team. Cobalt, realizing Fraidy Kat wasn’t present, got up to retrieve her, before getting stopped by Respawn. Inkling snooped back into Kat’s email, which she still had access to, finding correspondences showing Kat leaking the footage on the A-maze-ing Toy Company on the internet to drum up more interest in her reality show. There was also an angry draft email full of swears asking why the “mainstream media pieces of shit” had been lumping her in with “those pieces of shit.”
Spook’s room was deadly quiet. A concerned Cobalt went to check on her, calling the others over when they were confused by Spook’s state. Inkling did a quick check, discovering that Spook seemed to have died. After exhausting herself in the previous night’s adventure, the additional pressure from the news headlines took the life out of Spook. (She had been full up on conditions as of the previous session, and the headlines influenced Savior to go up and Mundane to drop. As she was unsuccessful in resisting the shift, her Mundane unable to go lower, she was removed from the situation.) Respawn called 911 telling them someone might be dead or incapacitated at the penthouse. Cobalt thought on the package they received last night, a tool they acquired from home for America, and ruled it out as any help in this situation. Inkling suggested they contact Spook’s parents as they would be most knowledgeable about things regarding the dead/undead.
There was a knock on the door, which Cobalt answered as usual. Inkling followed them out to see who it was. The gentleman at the door looked like a rugged adventurer, a dusted coat upon his back, a satchel over his shoulder, and a strange device strapped to his chest. Inkling recognized this to be Ilijah, the time/dimension hopper most of the team met in Spook’s sanctuary. He told the two at the door he was here to deliver a package containing the solid gold feather to Spook from her parents. Inkling told Ilijah he might want to notify Spook’s parents that she was showing signs of being dead. Cobalt was hoping they would be able to provide some “life-support” (as opposed to tech-support) for their situation. Ilijah called Dr. Phantasma to update her on the situation. After letting the team know Dr. Phantasma just needed some time to make herself presentable, he tossed a floating globe onto the ground, took Cobalt’s offered muffins, and grabbed a seat on the still damp couch.
After a minute, the globe projected the big, black, imposing figure of Dr. Phantasma, dressed in a tight synthetic black suit, a full face gas mask, and various tanks, syringes, and other gadgetry strapped to her body. Cobalt picked the globe up to bring it to Spook’s bedroom, where Dr. Phantasma’s larger than life and looming figure examined her daughter. She prescribed the following remedy, which Inkling wrote down on paper she had on hand.
- 16 oz. bottle of lemon lime flavored Gatorade
- 2 tsp of yeast
- 1 tsp of powdered peanut butter
- 1 pinch of oregano
- 1 chewable vitamin B12 tablet
Put everything together, dissolving the vitamin tablet into the mixture. Shake and pour it down Spook’s throat. Then hit her with a defibrillator.
The team split up to gather the ingredients. Respawn got the Gatorade from a vending machine from the lobby, Inkling got the yeast from the kitchen, Jack just happened to have a bunch of oregano in one of his pockets, and Cobalt went to ask Fraidy Kat if she had any powdered peanut butter. When Fraidy Kat heard out their request, she said she had some. She kept it for making a surprisingly effective hangover cure: powdered peanut butter and a vitamin B12 tablet mixed into lemon lime Gatorade. Cobalt returned with the last two ingredients which were added to the Gatorade bottle. The mixture was shaken up and Inkling poured it down Spook’s throat. Just then Emergency Medical Services showed up to respond to the 911 call, ready to attend to their patient. The last item they needed brought to them, Inkling grabbed the defibrillator base unit as Jack grabbed and applied the paddles, to the confusion of the EMS personnel. After the shock jolted through Spook’s body, she awakened and vomited the contents of her stomach onto the floor. Respawn offhandedly told EMS to just bill everything to Aegis. Spook spotted the image of her mother and has a blunt and short conversation with her, before she doubled over and puked some more. Spook also recounted what she remembered of the previous night’s events, explaining how Vanquish wanted to study her to look for a way to cheat death.
Inkling’s phone buzzes with another concerned text from her parents after the emergence of the morning’s headlines. She replies for them not to worry because she’s safe, adding that she was part of a superhero team. After a pause, her mom responded for Amy to at least put that on her college application. Respawn also receives a text, from Spider. His teacher congratulates Respawn on being featured on the news, and tells him to “wear the jacket” per their deal.
After the conversation turned to the news crews outside, Spook got up saying she would take care of the problem. After emerging from the front entrance, she told them to “Leave!” in an even but insistent voice. After a couple of repetitions and no signs of moment from the crews, she started to push the news vans back toward the street with her telekinesis, causing oncoming traffic to screech to a stop at the new road block. At Respawn’s request, Jack shot EMP arrows towards the cameras, causing them to fizzle out. The frightened news crews rush into their vans and quickly dispersed, but still managed to send the footage of Spook’s display of power to their stations as the next piece of breaking news to be analyzed and circulated.
Respawn mentioned they needed someone to be the face of the team for the purposes of addressing the public, to which most of the team shrugged and pointed out that he would be the best candidate for that as the media had already pinned him as the leader. Inkling’s phone went off again, this time a text from Kirin West telling her to lay low until the media frenzy dies down, lest she and her family draw unwanted attention from demons, or worse, the Renaissance Man.
The team headed to the Aegis facility, entering to the applause of the guards in the lobby. Spook asked to see Charlie while the rest asked to see America. As the bulk of the group heads toward the medical bay, Cobalt explained what the device they brought did and how it worked; After zapping the organic thing to be changed, one would mold the flesh to change its form, and set it with a final zap. It was a popular pastime on their homeworld to use and play with it on pets. After greeting America and telling her she could choose to look like whatever she wanted, she decided on looking like a young Salma Hayek. Cobalt got to work molding America’s flesh with Inkling overseeing and providing the image reference. Inkling suggested that America personalize her new look a bit instead of being an exact copy, so America helped access old Facebook photos to bring some of her old self into her new look. After America’s body was set with the pistol-like device, she walked back off to her cell with a smile on her face. Respawn then crushed the gun so it can’t be misused, before being informed by Cobalt that it was already a disposable one-use gun.
Spook headed to Charlie’s lab to ask him about the Medium. The Medium was a D list hero who dressed in a purple suit and a Halloween store quality ghostly mask. They had claimed to speak with the spirits of the dead and had used his abilities to solve murders. After The Medium went dormant for a couple of years, The Revenant popped up with a very similar build and powerset, stealing things with Dr. Phantasma. Charlie then expressed his desire to trace the origins of the Revenant to eventually find his identity, along with that of Dr. Phantasma and Spook — finding the thrill in hunting down their secrets. Spook asked him if he could contact her regarding what he discovered of her parent’s activities as the next hit, historically on Halloween, was growing closer. She gave Charlie her number, which she immediately regrets. Charlie managed to get a quick selfie with a glowering Spook before she left.
The team stayed low for a couple days, tending to their various personal projects. On October 29, Jack got a call from Yancy’s phone, an unfamiliar voice on the line. The voice said they had something of Jack’s, to which Jack said he’ll be right there and hung up. He announced to everyone that Yancy had been kidnapped. The phone rang again and the voice was put on speaker at Inkling’s request. The voice declared that they’ve captured Jack’s brother and the “prized 7-leaf clover”, offering a chance for Jack to win one of them back. They were waiting for him in Excelsior Park beneath the statue.
Jack hopped on his bike, with Spook along for the ride on the pegs, while Cobalt teleported Respawn and Inkling to the location. They popped into a cordoned off area, where an ambiguously brown man with long flowing locks stood before them in a gray, white, and lavender battle outfit with a compound bow in hand. He introduced himself as Carlos the Assassin. A quick search on the internet confirmed him as an assassin who took contracts that seemed impossible or interesting, and often made things harder on himself on purpose. A humanoid shaped target was strung up between buildings in the distance, which was confirmed to not be Yancy. When Jack and Spook arrived, Carlos told Jack he can choose his prize should he win their duel. After some Jack related hijinks of trying to convince Carlo to let him win/trade for both prizes, the stakes of the competition was raised to include Jack relinquishing his hat or Carlos losing his hair should they respectively lose.
The arrows started flying, Jack and Carlos taking turns to match and one-up each other. Trick shots flew, the arrows rebounding off signs and buildings and even straight through Respawn’s body. The bows were even drawn in unusual ways with various body parts as the competition escalated. Both quivers were emptied into a now porcupine-like dummy. Carlos conceded that Jack was able to match him, allowing Jack to choose one prize. Jack continued to insist on getting both prizes. Carlos walked over to a nearby abandoned lawnmower, ripped out the blades and threw it toward the dummy to decapitate it in a final show of prowess. In reaction, Jack notched his spear in his bow, launching it at the lawnmower blade. The hit caused the blade to ricochet away from the dummy and back towards Carlos, slicing through his hair as it blew in the wind, and lodging deep into the base of the statue. Dejected, Carlos took the laminated 7-leaf clover from his pocket and handed it over. (The 7-leaf clover granted its holder the Superhero Ability of Impossible Luck.) Carlos also told Jack that Yancy was stowed away in the janitor’s closet of a nearby Frydonalds. Jack mentioned that Carlos looked better without his hair, a complement that Carlos appreciated, and they both agreed to a rematch someday. “My Hair will look lovely under that hat.” shouted Carlos as he ascended into the sky on a helicopter rope.
Jack headed to the closet at the Frydonalds. He found Yancy in his Cosmic Jack outfit, gagged, and tied up with a flexible wire. Yancy’s glowing alien sword was propped up beside him. Jack grabbed the sword and told Yancy that he was not cracked up to be a superhero. Jack closed the door and left the restaurant despite the muffled protests from Yancy.
