Hello everyone! Since our Masks Game is no longer being recorded, but is still being played, I’ve decided to make a write-up of the events for those who are still interested in where the story took us. It’s no fun when a story is left hanging mid-way, so as long as this particular game continues and the site is still up, I’ll do my best to bring parts of it to our listeners turned readers. As these write-ups will be from my memory and vantage point, I also invite the other players to chime in with anything they would like to add.
The following is copied from what I slammed down in the comments section of episode 08, with minor edits for typos and clarification.
After hanging out with Respawn at the buffet, Inkling heads home to find her parents waiting up late for her. They had received a letter from the Renaissance Man’s scholarship fund for retired superheroes, specifying Amy Ling/ Inkling as the recipient. Inkling tore up the letter and tossed up the pieces before storming off to her room, her father right behind her demanding an explanation. She promptly locked the door and snuck out the window as she usually does. The muffled shouts of her father continued behind her, as she went to the penthouse for some shuteye. Splendid and Cobalt greet Inkling ineffectually as she stomped off to her bed.
Spook looked across the internet for more info on the A-maze-ing Toy Company in relation to their presumed curse. She found a conspiracy website run by Captain Enigma detailing his theories of the demonic nature of the company’s puzzles (ex. solution as 666). Cobalt intently watched Spook on the internet, notebook and pen in hand. They later explored the internet themselves, discovering ~all~ it had to offer, including porn of course.
Come morning, Spook made eggs for breakfast while the team gathered up to eat. Splendid shared his findings on the toy company with Respawn and Inkling, while Spook shared her own research. Cobalt tries a pancake recipe they found on Pintrest, resulting in a stack of “sunny-side up” pancakes with burnt bottoms. Inkling opens up to the team about how stupid she’s been regarding the Renaissance Man and how her parents are now on her tail.
The following knock on the door turns out to be Fraidy Cat looking for Spook/ Dr. Phantasma’s daughter/ The Revenant’s daughter. Splendid answers the door saying that Spook “isn’t hear right now” in an attempt to turn her away. Fraidy Cat tricks him into looking through the peep hole once more before kicking the door in on top of him. Respawn rushes forward to punch her in response, causing her to drop her phone, which he tossed to Inkling. Inkling quickly took the opportunity to change the passwords on Fraidy Cat’s email and Instagram before Spook stepped forward to go have a chat elsewhere with Fraidy Cat. Spook telekineticly took and returned the phone, but not before Congo Jack clipped it with an arrow, cracking the screen. This incited another exchange of Fraidy Cat pouncing on Jack, with Respawn and Gorilla!Cobalt intercepting.
At Fraidy Cat’s apartment, she revealed to Spook her desire to go after Dr. Phantasma to shoot a pilot for a reality TV show with the two of them as the stars. Fraidy claims that it would be a winnable fight since “fear is her thing and I can’t feel fear.” Spook was reluctant, but In the end, she said she’ll think about it, and returns to the team. Spook shares her strategy of taking on the Revenant first before Phantasma, while the team brainstorms approaches. Inkling decides to draw the talisman pattern on the rest of her team mates, drawing a blush from Cobalt when she asked them so show her their rock. Jack’s on the forehead, Splendid as a tramp stamp (along with butterflies, dolphins etc.), and none on Spook. Consensus eventually comes to continuing the investigation into the A-maze-ing Toy Company.
The team goes by ship to Salem, where the original HQ was once located to visit the toy museum there. Inkling attempts to start painting the ship for camouflage, and Cobalt shifts to match the witch related attire of other tourists in the town. The museum caretaker reveals that the team’s superhero names, including Alloy, had reserved tickets to a tour. These entries into the logbook were dated to the far past. Shortly after starting the tour, the team promptly started asking about demons and curses, drawing disappointment from the caretaker as he was looking forward to building the ambiance and suspense as the tour proceeded. The tour was fast forwarded to the gift shop where Respawn bought a puzzle book to give to Cobalt. The caretaker tried to build up the intro to the gift shop backroom, but was quickly dismissed by the team’s lack of seriousness regarding the ‘scary’ situation.
The room opened to a labyrinthine pocket dimension full of different toys, props, and costumes. The team was prompted to dress up in high school stereotype related costumes in order to play the Master’s game. Jack went nerd (including taped glasses iirc), Splendid was a jock (letterman jacket and football), Spook donned a prom queen dress, Respawn went greaser (leather jacket), Cobalt shifted into a cheerleader outfit, and Inkling went as is sans mask. The team then stepped through a black door/portal, but not before Cobalt convinced the caretaker to reveal that the team was to test a new game for the Master.
The team step into a rainy scene beside a broken down van full of luggage near a house up a hill. Powers were confirmed that they still work, though the entrance the came through was no longer there. After some discussion on horror movie cliches, Cobalt decided to turn into the dog. Respawn took the lead in playing along, heading up the the house and requesting refuge from the storm. After some back and forth with the caretaker who was playing his role in the game vs. the team who were using their powers and not fitting the part, the group was separated to the boys and girls room for the night (Cobalt was with the girls).
Inkling did the standard look at everything in the room a la adventure games, as did Respawn in the boys room. Jack creeped about and pulled a candle holder on the wall revealing a secret passage. The boys proceeded through the passage, Splendid acting as the light source, which led to a peep hole into the girls room. After being disappointed that they missed everything that there was to see, the boys turned back. The floor then gave out under Respawn, leading to an icy cold meat locker, but Jack and Splendid successfully stopped the fall and lowered everyone down. A sound in the hallway draws the girls out of the room, leading to a ghost in the room down the hall telling them to leave. Spook politely acknowledged her request and closed the door as everyone backed off and turned. There they were faced with Hellion playing his role in the game with a meat cleaver. Spook stands firm and takes the cleaver from him after he lunged in for a strike. Cobalt tries to grow into a hell hound to try to be intimidating, but mixes up what earthlings find scary and ended up as a big, red, adorable corgi. Spook continues her pursuit after Hellion poofs away by portaling to his location. Meanwhile Inkling sulks about how ineffectual she is as the roof continues to burn above her and Cobalt.
Hellion appears before the boys, Spook holding his attention with her entrance through her portal. The boys whack Hellion, Respwan with a previously pick up tire iron, and Jack with a meat hook/chain combo. Hellion eventually throws his hands up and gives up on his game. Spook inquires about the curse, revealing that Hellion puts the board of directors through one of these kinds of games every 4 years on Halloween, in exchange for the company’s prosperity. Spook recognizes that that was the deal the company made and comes to an understanding with Hellion, to Respawn’s hesitance. The team eventually gathers and exits the game and museum, submitting corresponding feedback on comment cards on their way out (art critique from Inkling, making sure powers can’t be used from Spook, Mr. caretaker could be nicer from Cobalt).
Splendid finds that he has 4 voicemails waiting for him now that they are back within range of reception. Gary Bonds pleads for him to pick up the phone with increasing urgency with each. With the last one, he asks for Splendid to come superheroing by the company since one by the name of Discard has been wrecking things up.
